Mt Baker (WA)

Description: An annual classic - a ride not to miss!

Driving south meet in Squamish at 7 am at The Bean coffee shop & Republic Bikes 41340 Government Rd. We will car convoy Hwy 99 to the Sumas border crossing. Take exit 92 on your right off Trans Canada & then turn left onto Sumas Way. We will stop & reconvene at the Starbucks 100 meters on your right after turning onto Sumas Way. This is a recommended convening point if you didn't meet the rest of the convoy in Squamish.

From Starbucks we will cross the border & stop again 100 meters past the crossing for all to reconvene. Next stop is Kendall where we will start the ride. There is plenty of parking beside the gas station or very nearby.

The route has an elevation gain of over 1800m and is about 110 km in length. Overall elapsed time is about 6.5 hours if we take a nice lunch break at a restaurant in the town of Glacier on the return before riding back to the cars, otherwise about an hour shorter.

The ride starts flat and then proceeds through rolling hills; very scenic next to the river. There are some moderate hills after about 20 km with the real climbing starting at 38 km, about 17 km at an average 6 percent grade to the ski resort, then a few sections of up to 10 percent in the last few k's, the hardest sector of the climb featuring switchbacks to the summit. The road throughout is in good condition and traffic is usually quite light and bike-friendly.

We will convene again at the top where we can take photos & enjoy the spectacular views. The descent back into the valley is fast though fairly safe with no significant technical aspects. This ride is not a hammer fest, rather more a moderate though still challenging ride with absolutely wonderful scenery.

We will stop in Glacier on the way to Mt Baker where you can purchase and top up with water, as there is no certainty of water being available until your return to Glacier.

Most importantly you must bring a valid passport. If you will be crossing into the USA without a Canadian passport please head to the boarder at least 45 mins earlier as from past experience your entry in to the USA will take significantly longer.

Note. CBC Insurance does NOT cover you in the USA. Please ensure you have your own insurance for this ride.

Please email me using the form below regarding your interest and advise if you'll be joining the group at a point other than the Starbucks in Sumas.
