Dear Sir,

I am writing to urge the Minister to act immediately on a resolution from the Union of BC Municipalities calling for a revision of the Motor Vehicle Act to include a Safe Passing Distance for all road users.

More than 40 jurisdictions in North America, including the provinces of Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Newfoundland and Labrador, have already implemented this sensible, necessary measure, which would require automobiles to leave at least one metre of space when passing pedestrians, cyclists or other vulnerable road users at speeds of 50 km/h or less, and 1.5 metres when travelling in excess of 50 km/h.

The Government of BC has stated its support for active transportation. This measure would send a clear message that the government is sincere in its support – and will contribute to the safety of vulnerable road users of all ages.

Thank you for your urgent consideration of this matter.

Sincerely,
